I use the WorkSharp system for sharpening my chislels and lathe tools. I love the system. But I would say go with your comfortable with, and your budget is comfortable with.

City Hardwoods by Red Mountain Park.  For smaller projects I like to dig through the off cut bins at Woodcraft in Pelham.

Hand tool group,
Please reply to let me know what to expect this Thursday, August 17.

Should I have a project to work on?
Does the group work together on a particular project?
Do I need to bring tools of my own?

Thanks in advance.

General Discussion / Newbie Question
« Last post by MattM on August 15, 2017, 12:35:44 AM »
Hey everyone!
I'm brand spanking new to woodworking as a hobby. I've been playing with regular k/d pine 1x4's and 2x4's from the big box stores and I think I'm ready to start a real project with decent hardwood. Now, where the heck do I buy hardwood boards at a decent price? I'm on the south side of Birmingham and don't mind a little drive to find it, but at this point, I can't justify driving hours to get it.
Any help getting me over this hump would be greatly appreciated

General Discussion / Advice on a New Lathe
« Last post by gfranco81 on August 03, 2017, 08:41:05 AM »
Hey guys...I am looking to replace my old Craftsman lathe with something that was built this century...lol. I want something big enough to handle projects like bowls, small lamps, and the such without breaking the bank. Highland Woodworking has a Rikon 70-100 on sale for $349 but I am not sure if it is big enough to handle these projects with it being listed as a "mini" lathe. It states that it is a 12" lathe with 16" between centers (expandable in 24" increments with bed extension purchase). Anyone have any thoughts on this lathe?

Lathe Works / Lathe for Beginner
« Last post by CWhitknee on July 17, 2017, 12:53:53 PM »
Hello! I am looking at getting my husband a lathe for his birthday in a few weeks. I was hoping someone here could point me in a good direction. He wants to mostly do pens, but also have a capability of turning bowls and other smaller projects (wine corks and things of that nature) in the  future. We found a lathe at Harbor Freight just up the road from Woodcraft in Pelham. I'm not sure if that's a good investment or not.

I was hoping someone might be able to give me an insider's suggestion. I'm trying not to spend more than $250 on the lathe; however, at the same time I want to invest into something that he'll be able to learn and grow upon.

Thank you!!!
