I'm brand spanking new to woodworking as a hobby. I've been playing with regular k/d pine 1x4's and 2x4's from the big box stores and I think I'm ready to start a real project with decent hardwood. Now, where the heck do I buy hardwood boards at a decent price? I'm on the south side of Birmingham and don't mind a little drive to find it, but at this point, I can't justify driving hours to get it.
Any help getting me over this hump would be greatly appreciated
City Hardwoods by Red Mountain Park. For smaller projects I like to dig through the off cut bins at Woodcraft in Pelham.
You might also try Magic City Plywood on 2nd Ave. in Birmingham. Their primary problem is that unlike City Hardwood, you cannot look through lumber stacks, they are wholesale only. As an AWG member, you are allowed to buy there. They do not take checks and there is a 3% surcharge if you use a credit card.
